PMS Myths

For years women have been told it's "just mood swings" or that it's "all in their head."
But the truth is much deeper.
Our hormones are constantly communicating with our brain, our nervous system and our entire body. When these rhythms shift before our bleed, some women experience physical and emotional symptoms that are very real.
Understanding these changes isn't about labelling women as "hormonal."
It's about learning the language of our bodies so we can support them with nourishment, rest, movement and compassion.
Knowledge is power.
And when women understand their cycles, everything begins to make more sense.
Lets gently clear some of those myths up.
Myth: All women get PMS.
Truth: Not every woman experiences PMS. Some may notice subtle shifts before their bleed, while others feel very little at all.
Myth: It’s “all in your head.”
Truth: PMS is very real. It’s the result of natural hormone fluctuations interacting with brain chemistry, which can influence mood, energy, and physical wellbeing.
Myth: PMS is just about being moody.
Truth: PMS can involve both emotional and physical symptoms — things like cramps, bloating, headaches, fatigue, and breast tenderness alongside mood changes.
Myth: You should avoid exercise.
Truth: Gentle movement can actually be incredibly supportive. A walk in nature, stretching, or yoga may help ease cramps, headaches and tension.
Myth: PMS gets better with age.
Truth: For some women, symptoms can actually intensify as hormone patterns begin to shift in the years leading into perimenopause.
Myth: PMS and PMDD are the same thing.
Truth: PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) is a much more severe and debilitating condition that goes far beyond a “bad mood” before your period.
Myth: It’s just an excuse for bad behaviour.
Truth: PMS is a legitimate health experience driven by hormonal changes. For some women, symptoms can temporarily impact mood, focus, and daily functioning.
